Hibiscus ‘Summer Storm’ PPAF

Hibiscus ‘Summer Storm’ flaunts fabulous black-purple foliage that is the darkest of any hardy hibiscus, darker even than H. ‘Kopper King.’ Huge, 20 cm blooms have large overlapping pink petals with a deep magenta eye and rose veining. Nodes along the stem as well as the tips produce flower buds, making H. ‘Summer Storm’ free flowering from midsummer to frost, a much longer bloom time than many other cultivars. A spectacular performer for the late season garden!

Uses

Use as a specimen in sunny perennial gardens, in mixed borders or bogs, or as a temporary screen. Attracts hummingbirds.

Cultivation

Requires full sun to light shade and deep, well-drained soil. Although preferring moist soil to wet soil, if well watered for the first two years, can become somewhat drought tolerant. Deadhead for longest bloom. It should be heavily mulched the first winter and in spring. Cut back any remaining stems before new growth appears. Emerges as late as mid June, but will then grow rapidly. Not usually bothered by insect pests or diseases, nor favoured by deer.
