Panicum virgatum ‘Huron Solstice’ PPAF
|
Similar to popular Panicum ‘Prairie Fire,’ this new selection has blue-green foliage that turns an even deeper shade of wine-purple beginning in early summer. Unlike the former however, whose leaves curl at the top, P. ‘Huron Solstice’ is strictly upright from top to bottom, which creates a striking architectural silhouette. In early fall, dainty, deep purple seed panicles interweave decoratively atop and through its upper leaves.
Uses Effective as a specimen, in masses, for screening, alongside ponds or streams, or even in large containers. Cultivation Grow in well-drained soil, with dry to medium moisture, in full sun. Performs well in any soil, from sand to clay, and even withstands periodic flooding. Cut back clumps to the ground in early spring. No serious insect or disease problems. Not usually appealing to deer.
