Dianthus ‘Shooting Star’ PPAF
|
Fragrant! The striking flowers of Dianthus ‘Shooting Star’ have overlapping petals of magenta purple, centered with plum rings, and exuding a wonderfully spicy scent of cloves. Though flowering is most prolific in early summer, it will rebloom in fall if spent flowers are removed. The evergreen foliage is blue-green and forms a compact mound.
Uses Use massed or as a specimen in borders, in rock gardens or in containers. Can be cut for bouquets. Attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. Cultivation Grows best in full sun in well-drained, neutral to slightly alkaline soils. Drought tolerant, but produces fewer flowers in hot, dry areas. In winter add a layer of mulch to protect the evergreen foliage. As soon as the weather begins to warm up, remove all of the mulch to prevent crown rot.
